If your computer has a Windows operating system, here's how to move the "My Documents" folder — and to save hard drive space too. But first, a couple of questions:
- Did your computer come with more than one partition of similar size (such as a C: and a D: drives)? Some computer manufacturers do this, but if not, you can also usually add a second hard drive and be in this same situation.
- Is your C: drive getting full?
Okay. If you answered "Yes" to these two, then it's time to move your "My Documents" folder to the second partition or drive. How?
How to move "My Documents"
Simple. One of the following will be the first step you need to take:
- Click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop
- Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop
- Click on Start, and then click on the "My Computer" icon
Make sure this window does not take up the whole screen.
The next step is to either:
- Click on the D: drive (or whatever the drive letter is for the second partition)
- Double-click on the D: drive (or whatever the drive letter is for the second partition)
Now, using your RIGHT mouse button, hold that button down on the "My Documents" folder and drag it over to the window and let go of the button.
In the menu that appears, choose "Move".
Wait until it's done moving the files.
Now start filling up the new drive! (Kidding, but that is what will happen...) |
