Continued from A Windows Alternative, Part
I
I have been using the Xandros Deluxe Desktop Linux now for about five days, and here
is my report to date.
Its stability has definitely impressed me; I've had no crashes whatsoever, and I can
run the following:
Linux system running Windows 98SE in a windows in Linux, this in turn running Quickbooks
2002 Pro, an instant messenger & and email client. Linux is also running three file
transfers using two different programs, a music player streaming an Internet radio station,
two web browser windows, a file manager and another window downloading a couple of new
programs to be installed.
Windows running inside of Linux boots in 12 seconds.
No skipping of the Internet music stream.
And this is On a 500MHz/320MB computer!!! (In other words, it's OLD ...)
Out of the box, this software comes with OpenOffice v1.0.1 which allows me to open,
change, and save files to Microsoft Word v6 (old DOS version) through to Microsoft Word
XP. I can also set any one of these versions to be the default file type if I want. And
the same holds true for Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel files.
I have also installed WinZip and a few other Windows utilities to be used natively on
the Linux desktop.
From what I see at this point, almost any Microsoft Windows user could easily move over
and not skip a beat.
I'll keep you posted as I continue testing.
