InkJet cartridges — why?

Inkjet cartridge printers are everywhere. Businesses, homes, even tool booths.

Why?

They are CHEAP. (To buy...)

And most computer users never look past that one point — initial sticker shock.

Yet, prices of inkjet cartridges are flaunted in front of your eyes every day in newspaper ads, office supply stores, webpage banner ads, etc. — because the profits on inkjet cartridges are so absurdly high that everyone and their brother wants to sell them to you.

Your actual cost to print an average text file on a single sheet on an inkjet cartridge printer is around $0.15. (Of course this varies based on the printer brand and model.)

That doesn't sound too bad, until you calculate in the number of pages you print per year and compare that to a laser printer which would only cost you $0.02 per the same page.

There may be some truth to the rumor that inkjet cartridge ink costs more than human blood:

Why is the cost of inkjet cartridge printing so much higher? Lots of waste is one reason. Look at the video in this article: Inkjet Secret.

Many of you have complained to us about getting "low ink" warnings just after installing a new cartridge. There currently is a class action lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard for it's inkjet cartridge replacement warnings. Article here: Class Action Challenges HP's Inkjet Replacement Warnings.

What can you do to lower your Inkjet cartridge costs?

Ok, so what can YOU do to lower this cost and be more environmentally friendly at the same time?

Don't use an inkjet printer unless you absolutely have to. Period.

Alternatives available to you are:

Both also have utilities you can buy to do more with PDF files.

Use a laser printer for your black-and-white printing. Laser cartridges are more expensive to buy, but you won't need to buy anywhere near as many.

Have a photo shop print your pictures; depending on your local photo shop, it will likely be cheaper than an Inkjet printer. Or email them to your family — MUCH cheaper and "greener" as well.

If you print a lot of color pages, investigate getting a color laser printer.

Save some of your hard-earned money — stop using inkjet cartridge printers!

Cheers!
